'My old films embarrass me'

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan talks of his family being against his entering films, how he has no plans to shake ‘King Khan’ from his pedestal,
Aamir Khan. More Picsvisiting cinema halls to catch audience reaction and more. Below is the transcript of the interview on CNN’s Talk Asia. Your most recent film Ghajini is now the biggest Bollywood success ever. Did you have any idea that it would be quite as huge as it is? Aamir Khan (AK): You can hope that, you can hope that for all of your films. But you can never really tell until you see the film with the audience, how it’s going to play with the audience in the theatre. So I think in Ghajini what we set out to make we were in fact able to achieve that. I realised that I’m making a hardcore mainstream film after really long, which is fine. I guess I’m happy to do that. After this movie made it so big, people said that you were the real “King Khan”. And that you’d kicked off Shah Rukh off his perch because he appeals to the masses but you’ve managed to do this thing that loads of actors would love to do. In that you’ve had both critical and commercial success in spades. How do you do that? How do you stop from being pigeon-holed in one box or another? AK: Well, you know I just do work which excites me and which I enjoy doing. I just do work which makes me happy. And I have absolutely no intentions of kicking Shah Rukh off his pedestal. Though I have to say I don’t think he ever was on it. But in my opinion the actor who I really look up to is Mr Amitabh Bachchan. He is someone who’s work I really like and he’s a fantastic actor and the kind of stardom that Mr Bachchan has seen none of us can ever hope to see. So for me he’s the guy. Arguably one of the most talked about aspects of Ghajini was your physique; let’s have a quick look at how you got quite so buff. Good lord, I hope that doesn’t bring back too many painful memories for you, I mean were there not days you just went “oh for a goodness sake no movie is worth this hell?!” AK: It was tough, it was really tough, and actually there’s a joke in my family and friends, when you want to get Aamir to do something, make a movie around it and he’ll end up doing it. So, I never thought I would ever train, it’s not something I’m into, but when I had to do it for the film I just went all out, did the best I could. It was really painful and it was really tough and when I look at myself... like the other day, I was looking at the photographs, you know, how it began and then I couldn’t believe it, I just couldn’t believe. So when I think about it now, it just seems like a distant dream, because in the last eight months I haven’t trained, because for the new film that I’m doing, my director looked at my physique and said now I want you to lose all of this. So I had to work towards losing it all for the new film that I’m shooting for. You’re not only a major actor but you also had your directorial debut in Taare Zameen Par. What was it like for you switching to the other side of the camera, at the same time obviously and starring in it? AK: It was tough, mainly because I wasn’t meant to direct the film to begin with. So I kind of jumped in a week into the shoot. I just went with my gut. Actually, I didn’t even have time to think, quite honestly. And now when I look back I realize that I had reached a point in my career where I had been wanting to direct a film for really long, and the pressure kept keeping me away from it. The fact that it happened this way didn’t give me a chance to think and decide, you know. I just jumped into it because I had to, and I ended up making the film, you know, to the best of my abilities. So I didn’t really, you know maybe if I hadn’t done that I wouldn’t be directing for the next 10 years more, I don’t know. So I guess I’m glad it happened finally because I’m happy with the way the film turned out and I’m happy with the way the kind of impact it had on people.

It was in her contract that she opened the show!” When contacted, Ramesh said, “This is all gossip some other artists have created to get easy publicity.”

Deepika: Heaven sent

Deepika Padukone had said that she loved to walk the ramp, but we didn’t realise that she loved it so much.
Deepika Padukone More PicsThe actress managed to walk the ramp wearing the showstopper for designers at both weeks – Rina Dhaka and Ranna Gill at the Fiama Di Wills show at WIFW, and at DFW earlier in the week. Displaying no signs of nerves before her second fashion stint this season, she dimples up when you ask her if she ever thought she’d come this far so fast. “It’s certainly a nice feeling to be walking the ramp at both the places as the showstopper. But I never felt sidelined even when I was just a model – and a debutante at that. For me, all that mattered was looking good and doing my best. And even today, I don’t consider myself a showstopper at all.” Not everyone disagreed – in the post show press con, when she was asked to comment on the dress that Deepika wore, Rina shot back, “You’re talking about the dress because Deepika wore it. It’s true that she put magic in it, but it was a nice dress anyway too.” And when another Deepika question popped up, Rina said, “Look, stars are stars because they’re exceptionally beautiful people. And when they walk the ramp for any fashion designer, everybody talks about them... unfortunately!”

Hrithik & Susanne's tattoo love

The love affair between Bollywood stars and their tattoos continues.

Hrithik Roshan and wife Susanne More PicsThe recent couple to be bitten by the tattoo bug is Hrithik Roshan and his wife Susanne Khan. The two got a tattoo done on their forearm. Thankfully, Hrithik and Susanne didn’t get each other’s names tattooed but instead opted for a six-point star. The six-point star, also known as Solomon’s Seal, The Star of David or Creator’s Star is symbolic of interaction of the divine with the mortal. Sameer Patange, who tattooed Hrithik and Susanne, said, “They have got a six-point star tattoo with a red circle in the centre. The reason why they wanted the particular design was too personal for me to even ask them.” It is learnt that the star couple decided during the shooting of Kites in New York that they would get the six-star tattoo done. Incidentally, Hrithik’s father Rakesh Roshan too has a similar tattoo on his arm. Even Hrithik’s co-star and close friend Barbara Mori has got a tattoo done on her forearm. Patange said, “Barbara along with her brother got a word tattooed in Hindi, which stands for brotherhood and is symbolic of sibling love.” Talking of tattoos, Sanjay Dutt not only has wife Manyata’s real name Dilnasheen tattooed on his arm, he also has the symbol of his star sign Leo tattooed on his biceps. Keeping with her image, Urmila Matondkar has a fairy tattoo. Talking about some recent tattoo trends, Patange added, “The traditional clientele earlier used to be men and women between 18 and 32 but now, I also have older people who not only get their spouse’s name tattooed but also are more inclined towards religious and spiritual designs.’’

Am I crazy to get married now: Kareena

Kareena Kapoor, who has received as many as four awards in just one month, says plans of her marriage to Saif Ali Khan may not happen for at least

Kareena Kapoor More Picstwo years as her career is going great guns. "It won't happen for the next two years for sure. Am I crazy to get married now when so many wonderful things are happening to my career? Saif himself is ultra-busy trying to set up his production house. Marriage can wait. I'm just happy to have him by my side. I've got the best guy any girl can ever have. "Right now I'm so busy I don't have time to sleep properly. I haven't even had time to move into my new house," Kareena told IANS in an interview. Overwhelmed after receiving four awards, she said: "Who doesn't like attention, recognition and awards? I've got four awards in a month beginning with the environment award I got from Erin Brockovich, then two youth icon awards from Rotary International and Stardust. And now on Tuesday I was honoured by FICCI which Yash Chopra gave to me. "My mother gets exasperated each time I bring home another trophy. Saif wants to know where I'm going to keep all of them. I've set aside a whole enclave for trophies and awards. I love looking at them. One day my children are going to look at them and be proud of me." Now, after a long time, Kareena will be in Mumbai for a month. "I've a month-long schedule of Rensil (D'Silva's) film coming up in Mumbai." Saif and Kareena returned home to Mumbai this week from Delhi without completing the shooting for D'Silva's film. We never expected such crowds. They were everywhere. And it was impossible to shoot," she says, sounding not the least put off. "Those people who love me out there keep me going. I love my fans and awards." And now Delhi will have to be fudged in the Mumbai schedule of D'Silva's film. The extent of the surging crowds in Delhi in the key shooting spots like Jama Masjid and Janpath for D'Silva's untitled film was so huge and unmanageable that the unit has returned without shooting the required sequences. Back in Mumbai after a week of futile shooting, Kareena says: "Everywhere we went there were these huge numbers of people who had come to see Saif and me. They were very sweet, very well-behaved. But unfortunately the number of people in key places like Jama Masjid and Janpath was always too high to shoot properly." As a result, there was almost no shooting. "We did can some shots. But it was impossible to shoot with wide-angle lenses because the crowds were everywhere. We'll now have to recreate some of the Delhi sequences in Mumbai." Kareena is certainly not unhappy about the attention she got in Delhi. "The people in Delhi were so warm. It just made me realise how much of a responsibility I have towards my audience. At this stage of my career I'd rather take another holiday than do a bad film."

"I d never date a film star"

Actress Sonam Kapoor was once upon a time linked to ‘good friend’ Ranbir Kapoor, who is now dating Deepika Padukone.
Sonam Kapoor More PicsGood for ‘em, we say, but all this mix-n-match seems to have got Sonam thinking on a different track. “I don’t believe that you need a man to complete you. You need to be independent first... Also, I’d never date a film star as then we’d never have time for each other then...” Now now now, it’s all about making the time Sonu. We think it’s time for the gorgeous actor not only to start dating but also ponder on the age-old adages, especially the one that reads ‘Never say never, dahling!’

Life and cinema had blurred for me at that moment. It was very unnerving. I didn't know what had happened to me, the set was so quiet. It was an overwhelming experience," she ends.

Gone are the days when Mallika Sherawat’s ‘Khwahish’ created nationwide stirs due to as many as seventeen liplocks. In the days to come, Bollywood viewers are going to get their due visual treats of passionate steamy kisses in intense romance scenes.
The latest buzz in the B-town says that the kiss in Mallika Sherawat’s ‘Hisss’ will be the lengthiest kissing scene ever in Bollywood. That is what the buzz from B-Town is. However, it is not the sex kitten Mallika who will be seen locking her lips on-screen, but the artists in the stretched out lip locking scene are Irfaan Khan and Divya Dutta.
The film is being directed by the Hollywood film maker Jeniffer Lynch and Irrfan did feel jittery when Jennifer told him about the steamy scene with Divya. The director sensing that Irfan and Divya were quite tensed promised them that the scene will be taken care of in the most possible aesthetic manner. The scene was shot in Kerala. The actors had to do the act in front of the entire unit and not break the lip-lock until Jennifer Lynch asked them to do so.

Freida Pinto Signs Woody Allen Movie!

Gorging on all the limelight brought in by the enormous success of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, hottie Freida Pinto bagged in another cake offered by legendary director Woody Allen. With the success of Slumdog Millionaire, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood movie offers start piling.
Woody, who is in this industry past four decades, has several hits, like ‘Annie Hall’ and ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ to his credit.
As the movie is still in its initial stages, it hasn’t been named as yet. The cameras will start rolling in this summer in London. Frieda co-stars with Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts and Josh Brolin. Though Woody Allen has been tight lipped about the movie, it is being described as a romance.

Farhan for Kareena: Once a director now a co-star

This is a pair whom the fans will eagerly await to see on-screen. Farhan Akhtar who has once directed Kareena Kapoor in ‘Don- The Chase Begins Again’ will now be seen sharing screen space with her. Produced by Excel Entertainment, company of Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar, the movie will explore the man-woman relationship and its dynamics.
Farhan Akhtar has confirmed the news and is quite impressed by the script. He is all praises for Kareena too and says, “she’s been a friend for many years” and the film has her in “a role to die for”.
Sudhir Mishra has done ‘Chameli’ with Kareena but these are bad times for the director. His last release ‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ bombed at the box-office and he had to shelve ‘Aur Devdas’ after Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Dev. D’. Since both Kareena and Farhan are currently hot in tinsel town, lots of hopes are pinned on this project.

Two new projects for Vidya Balan

With the advent of a new year on Jan 1, Vidya Balan has ventured on new arenas. Vidya’s birthday falls on the 1st Jan itself and this year she went to Panchgani with her family for birthday celebrations. The New Year brought two new promising roles for Vidya. One is Nikhil Advani’s ‘Chand Bhai’ and the other is Vibhu Puri’s ‘Chenab Gandhi’. The latter is produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. ‘Chand Bhai’ does not have Miss Balan in the central role and she gets to pair opposite Akshaye Khanna. The film is based on a delinquent boy’s character and has a social message attached to it.
Advani’s ‘Chand Bhai’ is a far cry from Advani’s last release ‘Chandni Chowk To China’. Says Vidya, “It’s nothing like the high-flying glam-wham stuff that one expects from Nikhil after Chandni Chowk. Chand Bhai is a stark very real kind of drama. And I get to co-star with a very talented actor Akshaye Khanna with whom I was in Nikhil’s Salaam-e-Ishq though we had just one passing shot together.”
Vidya is excited about ‘Chenab Gandhi’ too and says, “I haven’t really interacted that much with my co-star Hurman as yet. With Mr. Bachchan who plays the title role, I share a lifelong bonding. Right from Eklavya we’ve been paired in so many films right up to Chenab Gandhi and now Balki’s Pa. If I did all the films last year that I was offered with Mr. Bachchan, I wouldn’t be working with anyone else.”

Sonam Kapoor heading for an image makeover

Sonam Kapoor has had two releases uptil now and the girl has appeared as the coy girl-next-door in both her flicks. Now, it is time for an image makeover for this newcomer. But since no film maker has approached the Kapoor girl with a glam role, Sonam has turned to her Papa dear Anil Kapoor to get her wish fulfilled.
So now we have Anil Kapoor to produce a movie titled ‘Ayesha’ based on the the famous novel “Emma” written by Jane Austen. Sonam, of course, will be playing the lead role of Emma (Ayesha here) who is rich, easy going and flamboyant. Abhay Deol has been reportedly roped in for the project and a new actor named Arunodoy Singh is to play another male lead role.
While Abhay will be seen as a man who clandestinely loves and cares for the heroine, Arunodoy will give life to a role of a playful young man for whom the leading lady has a soft corner. V.J Cyrus Sahukar will be come across as a man who wishes to marry Ayesha. The task of editing the novel has been trusted upon Devika Bhagat, the writer of ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’.
Though both her previous films bombed at the box office, Sonam Kapoor has stolen everyone’s heart with her beauty and freshness. Lets see how much appreciation she gets in a glamorous role.

She has already asked people to block the date.”
