Ten years on...

What caught our eye on the sets of Hello India was Akshay Kumar with a guy bearing an uncanny resemblance to him. What was Akshay doing with a body double, when he is known to not use one for his action scenes? Producer-director Shabnam Kapoor said, "Although Akshay loves doing all his scenes, we used the lookalike for his crowd scenes."Incidentally, Akshay has a track record of finishing all his incomplete films (Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahin and Police Force are two) years after the films went on floors. Hello India is a similar film which was launched as Purab Ki Laila Paschim Ka Chaila ten years ago and was supposed to mark the debut of Namrata Shirodkar, who has already bid goodbye to the industry.

Wait training

Vishal Bharadwaj has finally signed Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after many missed chances
After extracting a fabulous performance out of Tabu in Maqbool, Kareena Kapoor in Omkara and hopefully, Priyanka Chopra in Kaminay, Vishal Bharadwaj is all set to team up with the one actress he has always wanted to work with - Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The project will go into production at the end of the year.
Aishwarya said, “Vishal and I have wanted to work together ever since he was the music composer on a project that got shelved. We had promised one another that I would star in his film whenever he turned director.”
Vishal had offered Aishwarya, a film called Timbuctoo, right after his directorial debut in the children’s film Makdee (2002), but that got shelved. So the wait just got longer.
The actress recollected, “I was very impressed by Vishal’s work. But he insisted that we would work together only when he found absolutely the right project. That has finally happened. Vishal has bounced the script off me. And we both feel this is the right project for us to come together.”
Vishal BharadwajInterestingly, 2009 is a flurry of activity for Aishwarya, what with her giving the nod to new films with Vishal Bharadwaj, Rituparno Ghosh, Abhinay Deo and Vipul Shah. For Vipul Shah’s film, Aishwarya and Akshay Kumar come together again. Talking about the film, Aishwarya said, “It’s something that Vipul, Akshay and I haven’t done before. The last time Akshay and I came together in Khakee, we played almost antagonists. This time we will hopefully play a more compatible couple.”

SRK goes under the knife

SRK, Shah Rukh Khan, Karan Johar
Poor Shah Rukh Khan. The actor, who underwent a difficult and painful back surgery some years ago, is now destined to go under the scalpel again for a tear in the shoulder muscle. He suffered the injury in Mumbai when shooting a stunt scene for Mudassar Aziz’s Dulha Mil Gaya. But, as if keeping in mind the old adage ‘no pain, no gain’, SRK continued shooting with occasional physiotherapy from his old friend Dr Ali Irani. Then, instead of resting, he flew to LA where he had a month-long schedule slated for Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan. The LA winter did him in. He was taken to a hospital in pain where an MRI showed up the tear in his left shoulder. Now the actor is back and looking at undergoing a shoulder arthroscopy to repair the tear in his supraspinatus muscle.
Talking to this paper, SRK who dragged on in LA through the pain just so that Karan Johar’s shooting schedule might not get disrupted, admitted, “I was advised surgery, but pulled through on temporary medical assistance until I could not bear the pain any longer. I have to now go in for surgery in the next few days.”
He has no choice because the next schedule of My Name Is Khan requires the Bollywood Badshah to be fighting fit and performing all kinds of stunts. His doctors, of course, have advised him otherwise. “Inshallah, I’ll be fine,” smiled the hero.
Meanwhile, the Bollywood Badshah remains undaunted at the prospect of surgery. At the Asia West Pacific Regional Physiotherapy Conference organised by Dr Ali Irani of the Indian Association of Physiotherapy, he kept medicos, some 800 physiotherapists, delegates from 23 countries and students in splits by referring to all the injuries he has faced.
Said Shah Rukh, “Thanks to my injuries, I know every part of my body, all the muscles, the tendons. My body has pieces of metal in it.” His interaction with physios began from the age of 15. “I was playing soccer at Delhi’s Ambedkar Stadium and developed a lower back problem. That was the end of my professional sporting career. I would have preferred it to the one in showbiz,” he said. “Indias are used to medicines of hakims and vaids. Invasive therapy is not the order of the day. Physiotherapy for most means massage. I love massage though,” he said smiling.

Aamir to testify in underage driving case

The actor, prime witness in the accident involving an 83-year-old man and a 15-year-old driving illegally, records his statement with Khar police
Khar police has named actor Aamir Khan as prime witness in an accident case where an 83-year-old man was knocked down by an underage driver at Linking Road, and later succumbed to his injuries.
On January 3, the 15-year-old son of a carpenter stole his father's bike for an early morning joyride and ended up causing the death of senior citizen Moti Jhangiani who was walking to a temple.
Aamir Khan who happened to be passing by saw the accident and sent his staff to assist the victim who later died. The star has now agreed to testify in the case.
Four days ago Aamir, back in town on a break from shooting his latest film in Bangalore, recorded his statement with the police, and has promised to testify in the trial. His bodyguard and two other people who were in the car with him on the day of the accident, too have given their statement.
The boy was charged under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code for rash and negligent driving. He was arrested and then released on bail by court, and his father was fined Rs 2,500 for allowing his minor son to drive under the Motor Vehicles Act.
DCP Zone IX Niket Kaushik told this newspaper, "We have recorded the statement of Aamir Khan and three other people associated with him as they are the only witnesses in the case.""We had intimated him that we needed to record his statement as a witness in the case.
Aamir Khan was very co-operative and called others too to his residence for recording of the statement," said an officer from Khar police station. "He is the prime witness in the case and has agreed to co-operate fully when the trial starts."

Marry-go-round

Director Mudassar Aziz had met Sushmita Sen’s father recently. He has now proposed marriage to her
After meeting her parents in Kolkata in December, it seems that Mudassar Aziz wants to take his relationship with Sushmita Sen to the next level. We hear that the director proposed marriage to the actress recently.
Our source said, “Mudassar wanted to formalise his relationship with Sushmita. Mudassar was initially in awe of Sushmita, which turned into fondness and gradually the two hit it off very well. Sushmita too is very fond of Mudassar. However, she has chosen to be non-commital on the marriage front. Maybe she is not prepared for it as yet.”
Mudassar had confided in close friends that if it was in his hands he would make all his films with Sushmita playing the lead. “Even the script that Mudassar is penning down currently is being written keeping Sushmita in mind,” said our source.
Though Sushmita has had her share of relationships in the past, it may be recalled that Mudassar was the only one she took to Kolkata to meet her family. When we contacted Mudassar, he said, “The day I get married I will scream from the rooftop.” We then asked him if he had proposed marriage to Sushmita Sen, he replied, “Not true!”
Sushmita, true to her non-commital policy, did not reply to our messages.

Kareena-Salman bury the hatchet

After Kareena Kapoor made the first move to kiss and make-up with former friend Salman Khan on Friday, the two couldn’t stop cracking jokes and laughing together on the sets of Main Aur Mrs Khanna
The long-drawn-out cold war between Kareena Kapoor and Salman Khan has come to an end. Much to everyone’s relief, the two stars finally broke the ice while shooting for Main Aur Mrs Khanna at Panchgani on Friday. Cracks in the Kareena-Salman friendship developed when Salman had differences with Shahid Kapur during the Rock Star concert in 2006. Since Kareena and Shahid were romantically involved, Kareena’s relationship with Salman too hit troubled waters. For most onlookers, it was a rare sight to see Kareena, Salman and Saif Ali Khan laughing together and sharing jokes on the film’s sets. Although Saif doesn’t star in the film, he was there to spend time with Kareena. Our source from the production unit said, “When they started shooting for Main Aur Mrs Khanna, Kareena and Salman only behaved like professionals. Anybody who saw them share icy vibes would never have been able to tell that the two were thick friends once upon a time. Even as their on-screen chemistry sizzled in Main Aur Mrs Khanna, they refused to interact off-screen.In fact, things were so bad that director Prem Soni would have to discuss scenes separately with both the stars. But during the Panchgani schedule, Kareena and Salman hit it off instantly.”It was Kareena who made the first move in order to break the ice. Commenting on what exactly happened, our source said, “There was a sensitive scene that required a lengthy discussion. Ideally it was Prem Soni who would have discussed the scene separately with both of them. But this time, things were different. Kareena suddenly walked up to Salman and began chatting about the intricacies of the scene with him. Initially, Salman was taken by surprise but gradually he was amused by what Kareena was saying. Then suddenly, they started laughing out loud. Saif’s presence further eased things as Saif and Salman share an excellent rapport. A delighted Prem Soni then started discussing the scenes with Kareena and Salman together. It was an emotional reunion especially because Kareena’s sister Karisma too is a close friend of Salman.”Our source added, “Despite a cold war with Salman, Kareena had agreed to play the lead in Main Aur Mrs Khanna because she liked the script. But Kareena is happy to bond with Salman once again.”We tried contacting Prem Soni but the director was unavailable for comment.

Never say die

Practice makes a man (and woman) perfect. Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor learnt this the hard way on the sets of Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani

Katrina Kaif Ranbir KapoorLast week at Film City, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif had a tough time on the sets of Rajkumar Santoshi’s Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani, which also stars Katrina’s beau Salman Khan in a cameo role. Trouble started when Ranbir and Katrina found it rather difficult to perform a few complex dance steps by choreographer Ahmed for the song ‘Follow me’ in the film. Both Ranbir and Katrina asked Ahmed to change the steps. But Ahmed stood his ground. An exasperated Ranbir and Katrina tried their best to convince Ahmed but the choreographer did not relent. Thankfully for Ahmed, director Santoshi didn’t interfere in the matter, which was finally sorted out after Ahmed stood his ground.A source present on the sets said, “Ranbir, Katrina and Ahmed started arguing while filming the song. While Ranbir was not getting a large part of his dance steps right, Katrina had trouble with a few steps which were given to her. Although Ranbir and Katrina put in a lot of effort, they failed to follow Ahmed’s instructions.”“To be fair to Ranbir and Katrina, the steps were not at all easy as the song is a fast one,” our source added.Ahmed confirmed the story and said, “Ranbir as well as Katrina asked for few changes but I didn’t want to change a single move. Usually, rap songs primarily have close-up shots but this song mostly has long shots.”Ahmed isn’t the first choreographer to have differences with actors over complex dance steps. Many other choreographers too face a problem when many actors refuse to see their choreographer’s point of view.Ahmed said, “I have been lucky. I started my career when I was 20 years old and the actors treated me like a child. Now, the younger lot treats me like a friend. I ask actors to perform particular steps after evaluating how much and how well one can perform. For instance, I will not make Sunny Deol dance like Shahid Kapur or Aamir Khan dance like Jackie Shroff or Ranbir Kapoor like Shah Rukh Khan. They all have their limitations as well as their strengths.”Fortunately, after much practice over three long days, Ranbir and Katrina eventually got their steps right. Ahmed said, “Finally, Ranbir and Katrina came out with flying colours. You will see the results on-screen. Even though it took a lot of hard work, in this latest song, Ranbir has danced better than he did in the title song of Bachna Ae Haseeno.”Like they say, all’s well that ends well.

Sushmita Sen to play Benazir Bhutto

The tensions between the two nations has not prevented Pakistani filmakers from casting bollywood actress Sushmita Sen
Former beauty queen and Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen will be enacting the role of Pakistan's former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in a biopic to be made by Pakistani filmmakers. Bhutto was assassinated Dec 27, 2007, in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. "Yes, I am keen to play the role. The producers are waiting for a clearance from the Pakistan Peoples Party (Bhutto's party). Once we get the go-ahead, we will start the movie," Sushmita had earlier told reporters. Sushmita is reportedly working hard to get into her character by reading extensively on the life of Bhutto and watching footages on her. She is simultaneously working on her Urdu diction as well. Co-produced by Pakistani producers Zaid Aziz and Henna Rai of Karachi production firm Vox Vision and Leicester-based Sum Films respectively, the film will be bilingual - made both in English and Urdu. Tentatively titled "Benazir Bhutto: The Movie", it will be shot at various locations in Pakistan, the US, Britain and Dubai, where Bhutto spent years as a student and later as a political leader in exile. Apparently, Mahesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films is also battling out to make a biopic on the leader.

Hrithik injured

Hrithik Roshan was injured while shooting for Kites, yesterday
Hrithik Roshan was injured on Tuesday afternoon while performing a stunt scene for his home production Kites at Filmistan Studios. In the said scene he had to break the glass and while he was enacting the scene, a piece of the glass pierced his arm. There was panic on the sets and he was immediately rushed to a hospital in Lokhandwala. He received two stitches and he was discharged in the evening.Sunaina Roshan, Hrithik’s sister and co-producer of Kites, said, “Yes it was very scary, this is the first time such an accident happened on my sets and that too to my brother. For a moment, I thought that it was a wrong take but then I saw him bleeding, I was very scared. But when I saw him smiling in the hospital, I was fine. Thank God, he is not seriously injured but he has a couple of stitches.”

A musical affair

Salman Khan adds another feather to his cap; he is set to turn music director under Sajid-Wajid’s guidance
He acts, he paints, he sings, he dances, he writes scripts and now he is gearing to make music. That is Salman Khan for you. A source close to the actor said, “While working on the music of Partner, Salman didn’t approve of a particular song and discussed the shortcomings of the song with Sajid and Wajid. Although the alterations were technically incorrect, the duo went ahead with the modified song which went on to become a huge success.”
Salman KhanOur source added, “Salman has always taken keen interest in the music of all his films. He listens to the score and at times puts his foot down and makes sure that the music is altered according to his preference.”The Sajid-Wajid duo has been creating music for Salman’s films for over a decade — right from Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya (1998) to God Tussi Great Ho (2008) and the forthcoming Main Aur Mrs. Khanna (2009).Sajid, who spoke to us from Pataya, confirmed and said, “Salmanbhai has a great sense of music. He always gives valuable inputs. We are encouraging him to become a full-fledged music director. We are also trying to get him to sing his songs. Wajid and I will assist him.”

Akshay gets philanthropic

Akshay Kumar gives Rs 5 lakh cheque and also promises to look after the entire education expense of late constable Tukaram Ombale’s daughters, Vaishali and Bharti
Akshay Kumar is in a charitable mood. When Akshay learnt that two of his closest friends, actor Manoj Joshi and producer Rakesh Upadhyay were organising a show of Manoj’s play Chanakya for the family of late constable Tukaram Ombale, the actor promptly sent a cheque of Rs 5 lakh for Ombale’s family. That’s not all. Akshay has also taken the responsibility of educating Ombale’s younger daughters Vaishali and Bharti. Ombale lost his life while trying to nab terrorist Ajmal Qasab on the night of 26/11. Although Akshay did not attend the play as he was busy, he made it a point to send his sister Alka to attend the show. Alka met Tukaram’s daughter Vaishali and gave her the cheque.
Akshay KumarWe tried to get in touch with one of Ombale’s elder daughters, Vandana whose husband Rajendra said, “Yes, Akshayji has given us a cheque of Rs 5 lakh. His sister Alka gave us the cheque. It was very kind of him. Akshayji has also offered financial assistance for Vaishali’s as well as Bharti’s education. Vaishali is doing her B.Ed while Bharti is a final year B.Com student. Thankfully, we are now capable of taking care of the education expense of Vaishali and Bharti as both are in the final year but if they want to study further, we will think about it.”And have they spoken to Akshay after receiving the cheque? “Unfortunately we have not been able to speak to Akshayji as he has been very busy lately,” said Rajendra. Manoj Joshi said, “Although Tukaram only had a lathi to fight the terrorist, he did not care for his life even though he knew that Qasab had deadly weapons. Tukaram’s bravery should not go unnoticed. Akshay has done what few people would do. I have newfound respect for him.”

SRK advised surgery

Shah Rukh Khan’s shoulder injury has worsened. Doctors have asked him to get operated
On January 3, 2009, Mumbai Mirror broke the news that Shah Rukh Khan’s shoulder injury had aggravated, and the actor was in immense pain while he was shooting for Karan Johar’s My Name is Khan in Los Angeles. The latest is that Shah Rukh will have to undergo a surgery on his left shoulder if he wants to perform action scenes in the future.Doctors in LA told SRK that he needs a surgery when he had gone for an MRI. On returning to India, Shah Rukh met shoulder specialist Dr Sanjay Desai for a second opinion on Sunday. Dr Desai too told Shah Rukh that he will have to get a surgery done.Physiotherapist Dr Ali Irani, who is treating Shah Rukh, confirmed the news and said, “Shah Rukh needs a surgery on his left shoulder. We knew this even before he went to LA. Now, he has to decide whether he wants to get operated in India or abroad. He has an option of getting operated in Mumbai, LA or London.” “According to Dr Ali Irani, supraspinatus tear is a condition where the rotator cuff tears causing inflammation and pain. This leads to restriction in movement of the shoulder. Once his surgery is complete, Shah Rukh will need at least four months to get back to his hectic lifestyle. “Once the operation is done, the patient can go home after 12 hours. However, it may take anything from 6 weeks to 6 months for the patient to get completely okay,” said Dr Irani. After surgery, SRK’s hand will have to be in a sling for a few days and he will also have to undergo physiotherapy.Explaining the problem in Shah Rukh’s shoulder, Dr Irani said, “Since 2003, Shah Rukh has had partial supraspinatus tear of the left shoulder. Unfortunately, while performing a stunt for Dulha Mil Gaya, SRK further injured his shoulder.”
Dr Ali IraniIs there no other cure except surgery? Dr Irani said, “Yes, there is a cure. Even if you and I have this problem, we may not need surgery if we are not going to jump around or play cricket or do a fight scene. But Shah Rukh wants do everything, which is why he needs surgery. Moreover, he has an action film coming up after six months. But it’s not an emergency case. It will be a planned surgery.”“Many cricketers like Anil Kumble, Javagal Srinath, Srinath and Venkatesh Prasad had this problem and they got operated. Football players and tennis players too are susceptible to this condition,” added Dr Irani.
